America's most rewarding scenic roads are short. Under 200 kilometres means you can drive them at the pace they deserve and still be somewhere by evening.
Going-to-the-Sun Road, Montana
Eighty kilometres across Glacier National Park, over Logan Pass, cut into the mountainside.
The full route typically opens between late June and early July, depending on snow clearance, and closes in October. Lower sections stay open longer.
Vehicle reservations have applied during peak season — check the current requirement.
Vehicle length and width restrictions apply on the alpine section, which rules out larger campervans.
Trail Ridge Road, Colorado
Over 3,700 metres in Rocky Mountain National Park — the highest continuous paved road in the United States.
Closed by snow roughly late October to late May.
Long stretches above the treeline, with tundra and elk. Altitude affects visitors arriving from sea level, and getting out of the car at the top can be a shock.
Beartooth Highway, Montana and Wyoming
110 km of switchbacks to nearly 3,300 metres, approaching Yellowstone's northeast entrance.
Typically open late May to mid-October, and snow can close it in any month.
Emptier than Trail Ridge and, to many drivers, better.
Utah Highway 12
200 km between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef, crossing Grand Staircase-Escalante.
The Hogback — a stretch along a narrow ridge with drops on both sides and no barriers — is the section people remember.
Also passes Kodachrome Basin, the Escalante slot canyons and Boulder Mountain.
One of the most varied drives in the country, and open year round with winter caution on Boulder Mountain.
The Road to Hana, Maui
100 km with over 600 curves and around 50 one-lane bridges, taking most of a day.
The value is in stopping — waterfalls, black sand at Waiʻānapanapa, and short trails.
Maui has introduced measures to manage traffic and parking, including reservations at some sites. Check current arrangements.
Local residents use this road daily. Pull over to let faster traffic past.
